Red Rock Loop

The Red Rock Loop is one of Arizona’s most scenic byways, moving through lush green forested canyons surrounded by the region’s dramatic red rocks. The Red Rock Loop is a circuitous route between Highway 89A and Oak Creek, located to the south-west of Sedona.

 

Red Rock State Park is the majestic centerpiece of the  Loop, featuring a red sandstone canyon and a 1.4-mile stretch of Oak Creek. The riparian zone surrounding Oak Creek is rich in plant and animal life, with alder, ash, cottonwood, and sycamore trees, along with mule deer, river otters, and the threatened Sonora mud turtle. The park contains a 5-mile trail network, for hiking, horseback riding and mountain biking running through adjacent U.S. Forestry Service Land.

 

As with many of Sedona’s most scenic sites, Red Rock State Park was a popular filming location for classic Hollywood Westerns starring film legends including Errol Flynn and Burt Lancaster. 

 

The Red Rock Loop is full of scenic recreation spots with stunning views of the dramatic scenery. Crescent Moon Ranch is one particularly popular spot, offering overnight accommodation in the beautiful rustic setting of an original 19th Century homestead. Crescent Moon Ranch is located close to the base of Cathedral Rock, which is the area’s most iconic rock formation and one of the most photographed sites in Arizona. This is a beautiful spot for a leisurely afternoon picnic or a quiet overnight stay, with plentiful hiking trails and the serene banks of Oak Creek all located nearby.

 

Buddha’s Beach is a short distance from the Crescent Moon Picnic Area and Red Rock Crossing, offering a magical setting for relaxation and calm contemplation along the banks of Oak Creek. This peaceful setting takes its name from the popular Buddhist practice of building ‘cairns’ – small towers of rocks – along the riverbank.
